Haven’t seen a Northern Parula in Central Pa yet? There may be a good chance of seeing one right from the deck of the Ned Smith Center in Millersburg, which is only about 35 minutes north of Harrisburg. The Ned Smith Center of Nature and Art holds an annual Spring Bird Walk the last week of April and the first week of May. http://www.nedsmithcenter.org/ For me, the Parula was the top sighting. It was a lifer for many in the group of about 15. The walks are led by Scott Bills from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Some of the other sightings – not a (complete list) were:
- Scarlet Tanager
- Red Eyed Vireo
- Blue headed Vireo
- Black Throated Green Warbler
- Yellow Rumped Warbler
- Indigo Bunting
- Common Merganser
- Blackburian Warbler
- Wood Duck
- Ovenbird
- Wood Thrush
- Lousiana Waterthrush
I would highly recommend these group walks if you are interested in neo-tropical migrating birds. Scott and Conrad have high powered scopes and can skillfully find birds and let everyone take a turn. Beth from the Center provides binoculars if you do not have your own. The bird activity was good, the warblers were mostly staying up high as they have just started arriving in numbers and are primarily eating and scoping their territories. Good Times!
